Like Beowulf, With Toys

[I'm at work today and I'm liking it. Now for the first half of January, 2016 for favorite posts and other intriguing things I've found. -- David]

1. New Year's resolution No.1... be more creative.

2. Your monthly reminder that art can be really good and really problematic all at once.
People too.
You're welcome.

3. In order to be successful, your focus has to be so intense that people think that you're crazy <3

4. Yes, [person poster responded to], but AFTER Lilandra agrees to the duel and the teams beam down to the moon, Lilandra's aide asks, "The X-Men face hopeless odds, Majestrix...but they are exceptional beings. Suppose...they WIN?" Lilandra responds, "They will NOT win, Araki. You have MY word on that."

From that exchange, it seemed pretty clear that Lilandra -- regardless of the outcome of the X-Men/Imperial Guard battle -- was going to go ahead and (try to) exterminate Phoenix (to borrow a phrase) BY ANY MEANS NECESSARY.

5. Everyone needs more Hook!

6. Is your church grounded in God's Word, or has the leadership decided that it needs to look more like the world? Do you feel uncomfortable at times, but feel that it's not your place to question teachings? It IS your place and your responsibility to respectfully question anything which does not line up with God's Word!

7. One's intention to hurt others, no matter how well disguised, is still seen by God ~

8. Will they explain how the Oscars is just the movie industry masturbating itself?

9. I hate that whenever Marvel brings back What If these days it's never to pose a question; it's just an alternate universe something or other. What made What If fun was that it did ask the questions!

10. Saw a short eared owl on my way to Minot tonight. What a pretty bird!

11. Let's talk about masks. The most astonishing moments in all of the Star Wars films are when we first see Vader without his mask in Jedi, and the revelation of Kylo Ren in Force Awakens. We learn from these moments that Vader is this weak and unformed human being, whose mask had become his identity. From Ren, however, we get something completely different. We see a handsome, yet uncertain young man. Why does Kylo Ren choose to "wear the mask"? Why does he worship the burnt mask of Vader? Why would anyone want to become the man behind that mask? What unpleasant masks do we all put on to project intimidation or power that we don't necessarily believe we have? And when and how do we cross the line between Kylo Ren's aspirations and struggles to Vader's complete subjugation of the self?

12. [The Force Awakens] is no doubt the Star Wars with the most humor.
They knew they din't have to take thenselves seriously all the time and just be fun !

13. So has this happened to anyone of you?
Because it's happened to me a few times
You get into an argument with someone and they turn around and go "your wall is full of toys or cartoons etc, thus youre a child and i dont have to listen to you."
...
Seriously yeah i collect toys i build models i enjoy animation what the hell does this have to do with the argument on hand?

14. [George Lucas] is a creator, an artist. He is a director. He is a producer, a business man. He is, as many wildly successful people are, a many faceted person. And with those many attributes comes many strengths, and weaknesses. Inevitably some choices made would not be popular with many people in the world, but being the one who brought us this wonderful universe they were his to make. I sure am glad we are able to have this conversation, and it is all due to the (huge) risks he took pitching and making the original 'Star Wars'. So I do commend and respect him and his work immensely, and admire and thank him for it. But I, and all of you, have our own opinions, and are entitled to them. And thankfully so.

15. Screenwriting 101: You have to give the AUDIENCE a reason to like your characters. She DIDN'T sell BB-8 so we saw she was kind. She has an in-depth knowledge of scavenging ship parts so we see she can be smart with the Falcon. She fights those thugs off showing she is adept at combat.

Luke Skywalker... We like him because he says "We have to help her!" In reference to Leia, but that is about in A New Hope.

16. I feel like Rantasmo put it best: "It is our strengths that make us likable, but it's our flaws that make us interesting."

17. A nerd utopia shall rise for us

18. OK, any actor willing to actually research their role before playing them is ok in my book

19. Alan Rickman isn't dead. He's just having a panic attack back stage and he won't "go out there and say that stupid line one more time."

[Alas, this actor DID die of cancer on the 14th ... but I love the line!]

20. Translation: The Academy did not nominate MY favorite actor or actress (who just happens to be a person of color -- so white is not a color anymore?) so they must be racist!

*bang head here*

[me, in response to the Washington Post's ... post that because no black-skinned persons or the movies they were in were nominated for Oscars for the second year running, the Academy must be "racist", and now there's a hashtag Oscars so white on it, with everybody having an opinion ... anyway, I posted this at 1222 hrs, 011416, and in 26 hours it had 160 likes]

21. Death is not the worst we can endure when all that gives us joy gives us still greater pain. Not because it's forced upon us, but because we know of no other choice.

22. Isn't a hashtag [see status twenty for more details] like this even better than a letter? This is public and can be easily calculated, while letters are private so they can be ignored.

23. One good thing about being young and dumb is?
When you get older it gives you something to remember and grin!

24. Today's attitude is fueled by boredom, frustration, Jimi Hendrix, a Monster drink and a hot flash from hell.

25. I think they're getting people subconsciously ready for when they declare martial law.

26. Y'know, like Beowulf. But with toys.
