Ensign: Who You Are As A Designer

All ye inhabitants of the world, and dwellers on the earth, see ye, when he lifteth up an ensign on the mountains; and when he bloweth a trumpet, hear ye. Isaiah 18:3

AN ENSIGN ON THE MOUNTAINS                                        13 May 2016

Fashion design is really not my thing. Heck, I'm amazed if I wear matching socks some days!

The contestants on the reality show Project Runway competing to win top spot in that competition, in the midst of their designing "red carpet looks" and other "environmentally friendly" designs for their collections can find themselves tripped up at the very beginning. Their first challenge is to create something with limited budget, materials, and time that shows who they are as designers. Usually since the challenge is directed at the contestants, it's worded as the title is above.

Never mind that fashion design would not even be necessary had Adam and Eve just turned down the serpent or run to God after he made his offer of the one fruit God said don't eat! Just take a minute with me and look around at the creation (not the design, an important distinction). Scripture refers to God twenty times as the Maker and five times as the Creator -- I looked those up in a concordance -- but NEVER as a Designer. So if we wanted to ask the question "Who is God as a designer?" and evaluate Him based on who we are and how we feel and what we see, we're missing the point.

You and I are part of the creation -- we can't step outside it as the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit can. And ultimately, we cannot create something completely original either; at best, what you and I can do is work and design in the limited framework we do have. The first clothing created came from the LORD God as well ("Unto Adam also and to his wife did the LORD God make coats of skins, and clothed them," Genesis 3:21) and no matter how the appearance or degree of coverage has changed, they all have the same Divine inspiration.

You and I are children of the Most High God -- we're stuck with that title from Psalm 82:6. But we can make our own choice to be disciples and followers of His, and when we make the choice to accept Jesus' sacrifice for our sins, the only one God accepts ("Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me." John 14:6) ... really, that's when our challenge begins. But it's already been won -- heck, the entire competition has been won! -- just not by your effort or mine.

That's how we can make it work, people.

P.S. I write this weekly devotional to keep in touch, and I hope it's encouraging too! If it's not or I'm not or you'd just like me to get lost, please let me know. Thank you!

Thank You, Lord, that we can come to you in prayer and that we can count on You to provide for ALL our needs, even when we don't know what they are. And let us pray too for the peace of Jerusalem on both sides of the fence and all over the world.

Thank You as well, Lord, for everyone in leadership and service, both here and abroad. Thank You also for the opportunities we have and the promise of new life through You by Your Son Our Brother, Jesus Christ.

And I pray that we all seek and have a blessed week! Amen.
